    It is a comprehensive treatment of the microprocessor, covering both hardware and software based on the Z80 microprocessor family. Because of easy access to personal computers on college campuses, I have emphasized the use of assemblers to assemble programs. These notations will be used throughout the book without any prior explanation. It has a simple architecture and a powerful instruction set that includes the instruction set except for two instructions. Appendices might be included that contain primers on this material.

    In industry, for the development of microprocessor-based projects, 70 percent of the efforts are devoted to software and 30 percent to hardware. In addition, there appears to be a resurgence of interest in the Z80, indicated by the introduction of Zcompatible microprocessors by major manufacturers such as Hitachi and Toshiba. The basic subjects in this field will be covered, and more advanced topics will be included depending on the proficiencies of the authors. Once you master the elementary programming techniques, interfacing and design become exciting and fun.

    Such computer systems are small but have enough computing power to perform many business, industrial, and scientific tasks. This text is written in such a way that simple programming of the microprocessor can be self-taught. Chapter 7 is revised to include technological changes, and Chapter 8 includes a detailed discussion on flowcharts and flags. The basic concepts of architecture, programming, and interfacing are easier to teach with the 8-bit than with larger microprocessors. These chapters conclude by reviewing all the instructions discussed.
